چکیده

Since its title, this paper addresses one of the still open questions in sound localization: is our own perception of the elevation of a sound source affected by the distance of the source itself? The problem is addressed through the analysis of a recently published distance-dependent headrelated transfer function (HRTF) database, which includes the responses of a single subject on a spatial grid spanning 14 elevation angles, 72 azimuth angles, and 8 distances comprised between 20 and 160 cm. Different HRTFs sharing the same angular coordinates are compared through spectral distortion and notch frequency deviation measurements. Results indicate that, even though the independence of spectral elevation cues from distance of the source can be assumed for the majority of all possible source directions, near-field HRTFs for sources close to the contralateral ear or around the horizontal plane in the ipsilateral side of the head are significantly affected by distancedependent pinna reflections and spectral modifications.

The bat head-related transfer function reveals binaural cues for sound localization in azimuth and elevation.

Directional properties of the sound transformation at the ear of four intact echolocating bats, Eptesicus fuscus, were investigated via measurements of the head-related transfer function (HRTF). Contributions of external ear structures to directional features of the transfer functions were examined by remeasuring the HRTF in the absence of the pinna and tragus. The investigation mainly focused ...

On distance dependence of pinna spectral patterns in head-related transfer functions.

The aim of this letter is to address a little understood question in sound source localization: Can the distance of a near sound source affect our own perception of its elevation? The issue is studied by means of an objective analysis of a database of distance-dependent head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) of a KEMAR (Knowles Electronic Manikin for Acoustic Research) mannequin with different...

Elevation localization and head-related transfer function analysis at low frequencies.

Monaural spectral features due to pinna diffraction are the primary cues for elevation. Because these features appear above 3 kHz where the wavelength becomes comparable to pinna size, it is generally believed that accurate elevation estimation requires wideband sources. However, psychoacoustic tests show that subjects can estimate elevation for low-frequency sources. In the experiments reporte...

Reconstructing spectral cues for sound localization from responses to rippled noise stimuli

Human sound localization in the mid-saggital plane (elevation) relies on an analysis of the idiosyncratic spectral shape cues provided by the head and pinnae. However, because the actual free-field stimulus spectrum is a-priori unknown to the auditory system, the problem of extracting the elevation angle from the sensory spectrum is ill-posed. Here we test different spectral localization models...

Mechanism for generating peaks and notches of head-related transfer functions in the median plane.

It has been suggested that the first spectral peak and the first two spectral notches of head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) are cues for sound localization in the median plane. Therefore, to examine the mechanism for generating spectral peaks and notches, HRTFs were calculated from four head shapes using the finite-difference time-domain method. The comparison between HRTFs calculated from...
